Late Again

On Thursday morning my boyfriend, his sister/my roommate, their mom, and I left for a wedding in their hometown in Maryland. We drove and drove and hit traffic and drove and I missed my weekend challenge deadline and we drove some more. I apologize for that.

However, through all of this driving and necessary eating-out and sitting and being stiff I realized how different my job is than so many others and how much more important it is for those of us sitting at desks and computers all day to get moving. At gas stations I would stretch, do some jumping jacks, anything to stay loose and keep blood flowing. During a day at work, for those of us not on our feet, it is important to do the same, whether it be taking a lap around the office every half hour or hour, going for a walk during lunch, or stretching at your desk for two minutes. These littles things are not only good for you, they make you noticeably feel good as well.

This week, and permanently if you can, try to sneak in a couple muscle wake-ups a few times a day. The night before or morning of work pack a few ziplock bags of healthy snacks, like nuts and dried fruit, popcorn, pretzels, protein bars, etc. Aim for things with lots of fiber and protein to keep you full until your next meal.

So back to the fun things. The wedding was yesterday and it was so much fun. There were amazingly high levels of happiness and love, and even though I knew hardly anyone, by the end of the night I felt like part of the family.

I caught the bouquet. HA. And guess who caught the garter? (Thank goodness it wasn’t a stranger, that could’ve been awkward.) I didn’t exert much effort, it came straight to me. When the groom saw that he said he just mustered all the energy he could and threw the garter (which is light and didn’t fly very far) as high in the air as possible. Naturally, then, all Ryan had to do was raise his hand in the air and boom, we were sitting in front of everyone with music playing and cameras flashing. See evidence below…

All in all it was a beautiful wedding with a beautiful bride and groom and wonderful atmosphere. I am so glad we got to share their special day with them.

Try out those active tips at work this week and see how it makes you feel. Better? I bet so!

Weekend Challenge July 20th and 21st

Really? It’s already almost August? It feels like 2 weeks ago that I was obsessing over fall foods and pumpkin scented candles and Christmas shopping and now it’s almost time to start that process all over again? I guess this is what life is like when you’re not in school anymore. Everything just runs together. I need a dog. I’m going to be 40 before I know it.

We had a nice week and a full house. My boyfriend and his twin sister, also my roommate, celebrated their birthday(s) on Tuesday. Their mommy was in town as well, so everyone had a nice time. With everyone in the house crossing paths and coordinating schedules around each other this week sometimes the environment got stressful, which leads me to our weekend challenge….

This weekend, before you fall asleep, lay on your back and take a deep breath. As you exhale, starting with the top of your head, release all of the tension you’ve been bottling up. Move down your face, from your forehead to your eyes to your cheeks to your mouth to your neck and shoulders, arms, hands, legs, feet. Go nice and slow. Reeeellllllaaaaax. I find so often as I lie in bed at night that I’m stiff as a board. It has helped to loosen up my neck and back in the mornings and throughout the day.

During the day, keep a conscious eye on your shoulders. As you sit on the couch, are your shoulders up by your ears? Do a shoulder check as often as your think about it. Again, relax. Built up tension in your neck, shoulders, and back can lead to stiffness and headaches. Yuck! So become more conscious of your body tension and control your stress with a little muscle debriefing.

Better start spending more time outside since it’s going to be December in a week. I’m going to take a spin class tomorrow morning and then head to the farmer’s market. Hopefully the rain stays away enough to spend some time in the sun tomorrow afternoon. I have some library books to finish! Enjoy your weekend! Tell someone you love them (and mean it)!!

Weekend Challenge July 13th and 14th

Here it is! Another week gone, and another Weekend Challenge upon us. So what’ll it be this time? How about we try out some arm funsies (as one of my clients refers to them)… PUSH UPS! Your challenge this weekend is to do 60 push ups each day (Yes, Saturday and Sunday, and if you’re reading this on Friday then congrats, you get to do them tonight, too!) 30 regular and 30 diamond type. Spread it out throughout the day or do a couple of sets at once. They’re great for toning your arms, shoulders, and back.

Now I don’t know if the following picture will look appetizing to you or not, but it’s a picture of my dinner and I just had to document it because it was so dee-licious. A (Jennie-O’s) turkey burger, sunny side up egg, slice of tomato, and avocado slices. Take a gander…
ImageMmhmm, yummy.

Also, remember how I was thrown into the smartphone world last week? Well, turns out there is a panorama option on my camera. The following was my first shot, a view of Flagler College while our company was visiting in St. Augustine. Beautiful.
ImageI’ve got a busy weekend ahead. Our roommate is coming back and I’m having a thirty-one party on Sunday. If you want to take a look at (and even order!) products check out Click on “My Parties” at the top, and my name, Kelli, then shop away! I’m making lots of healthy snacks, like veggie and fruit trays, crock-pot meatballs, black bean brownies, and pink lemonade cupcakes! Of course, I’ll be documenting and hopefully putting up some recipes. Stay tuned!

Make good use of your weekend!

Just a Little Time

Happy hump day! Ah, Wednesday. Not quite the Friday feeling, but definitely better than a Monday feeling. I chose to spend mine visiting my boyfriend for the day. He needed a little cheering up, and what better way than to bring offerings of food and adventure? We went to see The Lone Ranger this morning. That movie was a lot of fun! I really liked it. Like a Pirates of the Caribbean adventure on land.

We’ll be heading to the beach in a bit, but I’m passing the time right now getting in some small exercises like jumping jacks, push ups, and planks. There are just some days you can’t devote an hour to a full workout, but you can still squeeze in ten (or even five!) minutes a couple times a day and get results. Whether it be waiting for your toast to pop, shower water to get warm, microwave to finish (You put food in for one minute? Do one minute of high knees and butt kicks!), or your friend to come pick you up, see what you can squeeze into your day. Every little hit helps.

Remember me saying I was going out to lunch with my friends? The fried shrimp was tempting, but I ended up getting tilapia fish tacos with coconut rice and black beans. So yummy.

So your lesson for today: every little bit counts. Don’t make excuses, you DO have time.

Remember Those Muffins?

Yeah, those pre-workout muffins? These ones. Well, I just made a batch with apples and raisins in them and let me tell you they smell DELICIOUS. I can’t wait to have one before my run tomorrow morning. I just cut up an apple and threw in a handful of raisins. I’m still using ultra grain flour, too. Yay healthy muffins!

In other news, did I mention I switched to the dark side last week? I finally got a smart phone (dun dun dun). And today my new case came in the mail! How cute!

It’s been a while, so lets get a few sets of bonus abs in!
25 straight leg raises
25 bicycles
25 crunches
25 kayakers (aka Russian twists)
1 minute plank
Repeat 3 times and feel the burn!

Tomorrow is the last day before Ramadan, a Muslim holiday where you fast during daylight hours and eat after dark. My friend is Muslim, and to celebrate her last day of “freedom”, she, another friend, and myself are going out to lunch. I love that even though we all come from diverse backgrounds and religions, we can still be good friends and have fun together.

Ah Soup, Must be… Another Hot Summer Day in Florida?

I’m sitting down to a yummy hot dinner (on another hot Florida day). Why would I make soup in the summer, you ask (or at least I ask myself)? Because it’s really yummy and really easy. It took about 15 minutes to make and all of the ingredients were already magically in my kitchen. Try this recipe for Turkey Meatball and Tortellini Spinach Soup and you won’t be disappointed. I changed the recipe a bit and used turkey meatballs (frozen aisle at Target) and this time had to use ravioli because someone kidnapped my tortellini. Whether you use ravioli or tortellini, it will still turn out wonderfully. Don’t forget to sprinkle some Parmesan cheese on top for that last little bit of flavor.

My brother and I escorted Mom and Dad to the airport today, and with that dropped off the rest of our holiday week as well. Lucky for my pet fishy Spartacus (lovingly referred to as Sparty), who likes to be petted and thinks he’s a dog, we stopped by Walmart on the way home and I got him some water tablets, so someone gets to sleep in a clean bed tonight.

I’ll be finishing off my weekend with a nice long stretch-session (as should you, if you read the weekend challenge yesterday…). Car rides and weekends off can make me stiff, so I try to do a little something (yes, even on days when I’m not working out!) just to feel healthy.

In case anyone was looking for something to watch tonight, Pirates of the Caribbean 4 will be on ABC Family. Hint Hint.

Weekend Challenge July 6th and 7th

Hello hello!

Excuse my tardiness on posting halfway through Saturday. Time flies when you’ve got company and a holiday to celebrate!

Your weekend challenge is to 1) try to work off all that BBQ you ate on Thursday before the fireworks. Go for a walk, hit the gym and air conditioning, do something touristy in your own town, etc… and 2) STRETCH! It’s so good for you. Try for 10-15 minutes before bed tonight and tomorrow night (and preferably every night). It really does help to make you feel better. More limber, less stiff, more ready for the day when you wake up in the morning. It also helps to alleviate muscle soreness before you even start to get sore after a hard workout. Give it a try. See what you think!
